What Does South Mountain Church believe?

What We Believe About…

God
We believe that God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He is a triune God existing eternally as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus
We believe that Jesus Christ is the only son of God. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, existing fully divine and fully human, yet living a sinless life. He took upon himself the sins of the world, died a sinner’s death on the cross, overcame sin and was raised from the dead in 3 days. He ascended to Heaven to take his place at the right hand of God to allow Man the opportunity to spend eternity in the presence of God. He will return to earth again to gather His people.

Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit is an equal part of the trinity of God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). He reveals Man’s need for Jesus Christ. He resides within all Christians and provides comfort, power, and guidance.

Bible
We believe that the Bible is the infallible and inerrant word of God. It was God-breathed and God-inspired to the human hands that transcribed it. It is used for the purpose of instruction, rebuke, exhortation, and redemption of Man to God. For this reason, we at South Mountain Community Church embrace the Bible as authoritative and the basis for both our belief and practice.

Man
We believe that Man is God’s creation made in His image. He was the climax of God’s creative efforts. Though created in God’s image, Man has a bend toward sin. This inevitable sin is the separating agent between God and Man, only bridged by a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

Salvation
We believe that because God loved His creation, He provided a salvific gift to bridge the sin separating Himself and man. Man can not erase his sin through works, but only through trusting in Jesus Christ as God´s offer of forgiveness. Salvation occurs upon one’s belief and receipt of Jesus Christ into his life through faith.

Church
We believe that the local church is the hope of the world. It exists as an earthly extension of God’s Kingdom on earth as a unified body of believers.

Baptism
We believe that Baptism is an act of obedience that serves as a symbol of, and follows, one’s salvation experience. It symbolizes the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus modeled this water baptism to set an example for all believers to follow as a public testimony.

Communion
We believe that communion is a symbolic meal of remembrance of Christ. It symbolizes the broken body and spilled blood of Christ, which were freely offered to allow for the forgiveness of sin.
